What is a Tariff Code?

A tariff code, also known as an HS Code, is a globally recognized system used to classify goods for international shipping. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it helps customs authorities determine applicable duties and track trade statistics. A valid tariff code typically consists of six digits, though in some regions, like the EU, it can include up to 10 digits for more detailed classification.

How to Look Up a Tariff Code

Finding the correct tariff code for your product can be straightforward using reliable online tools like:

Steps to Find a Tariff Code

  1. Describe Your Product:
Start by describing your product in detail. Include the material it’s made from, its use, and any unique features. For example: Ceramic ornament.

  2. Search by Chapters:
Use the tool to identify the most relevant chapter from the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, which organizes goods into broad categories. For example, Chapter 69: Ceramic Products.

  3. Select the Heading:
Choose a heading under the chapter that best matches your product. For instance, Heading 13: Statuettes and other ornamental articles.

  4. Refine by Subheading:
Narrow down further by selecting a subheading that closely matches your product’s details. For example, Subheading 90: Excluding porcelain or china.

  5. Verify with Lower Subheadings:
Check for additional lower-level subheadings for the most precise classification. For example, Subheading 98: Excluding common pottery.

Understanding an 8-Digit Tariff Code

EU tariff codes use up to eight digits, based on the Combined Nomenclature (CN) system:

  • First 2 digits: Broad product category (e.g., Chapter 69 for ceramic products).
  • Next 2 digits: Specific product grouping (e.g., Heading 13 for statuettes).
  • Next 2 digits: Further refinement (e.g., Subheading 90 for non-porcelain items).
  • Final 2 digits: Most specific classification (e.g., 98 for non-common pottery).

Example: Ceramic ornament

  • Chapter: 69
  • Heading: 13
  • Subheading: 90
  • Final digits: 98
    Tariff Code: 69139098

Tips for Accurate Tariff Code Searches

  • When using tools like Parcel Force, select EU for shipments to EU countries and non-EU for other regions.
  • If your product isn’t listed explicitly, search based on its material, use, or how it’s manufactured.
  • Ensure you know these key details:
    • Product type
    • Material composition
    • Intended use
    • Manufacturing process
    • Packaging method
